When it comes to decluttering and organizing our homes, our bedroom often goes low on the priority list. After all, fewer guests are likely to actually see our bedroom compared to our living spaces, powder room, and kitchen…
But at the end of the day, we spend a significant amount of time in our bedrooms. And a bedroom that’s decluttered and organized makes for a much calmer and relaxing experience.
So it’s time to up your bedroom on the declutter and organize priority list!
To get you started, here’s a few tips on how to declutter your bedroom for a relaxing space:
1-) Know your Trouble Areas
There’s a personal element to decluttering the bedroom that’s not as prominent in other spaces: it’s that everyone has different “trouble” areas. Some of us have too many clothes, others have too many shoes, and yet others have too much makeup and/or jewelry. The list goes on!
So it’s important before you get started to know where your trouble areas are. Once you do that you can come up with a an organizing system that emphasizes more space on the things you love and less on the things you don’t. Taking that personal approach will help it from becoming cluttered again in the future.
2-) Tackle Everything Behind Closed Doors…First
Here’s a question for you:
Why did your bedroom become cluttered in the first place?
Chances are a lot of it has to do with new items (or items that don’t belong) entering your space without a space to put it.
It sounds counterintuitive, but decluttering the spaces that are “out-of-sight, out-of-mind” in your bedroom first will make room for all those items that don’t currently have a home.
So what are those “out-of-sight, out-of-mind” spaces? Closets, drawers, under-the-bed, etc. Basically, it’s anywhere where there’s stuff that you can’t see directly.
3-) Know That Bigger Isn’t Always Better
If all your clothes don’t fit in your closet and/or dresser, it’s easy to come to the conclusion that you just need a bigger dresser.
Excuse my bluntness here, but…
No, no, and more no!
First, getting bigger furniture doesn’t necessarily solve the problem of having too much stuff; it only conceals it…
Second, it’s really important that our furniture is proportionate to the size of our bedroom space. Having furniture that’s too big for your room will automatically make the room feel closed in and cluttered…exactly what we’re trying to avoid!
So avoid the temptation. Take the time to actually go declutter your things and make more room. You’ll be happy you did!
4-) Optimize the closet space
Once you’ve actually gone through your belongings, it’s important that you’re maximizing the storage space you do have. Simple closet organization systems, shoe racks, and even over-the-door organizers can go a long way in making use of the space that you already have.
5-) Reduce space hogs
Keep an eye on bulky items such as sheet sets, towels, and heavy sweaters. Selling or donating just a few of these can make a big difference in the space you have available to you!
6-) Define a system for lightly worn items
One of the biggest enemies to a perfectly decluttered bedroom is the lightly worn clothing that we tend to just throw on the floor when we’re done with them.
Avoid that by coming up with a system for those clothes. We put up hooks in our bedroom that we put our robes, my purse, etc. But a small basket or other defined space to put your lightly-worn clothes will help keep them out of the way. Having a system will also prevent them from getting mixed up with the dirty clothes that haven’t actually made their way to the hamper yet…
